 Steps To Acquire A Leasehold Title In Uganda

In Simple Terms, A Land Lease Is An Agreement That Permits The Tenant To Use A Piece Of Land Owned By The Landlord In Exchange For Rent. It Is A Form Of Land Tenure Involving A Land Owner Granting The Right To Another Person, The Exclusive Possession Of Land For A Stated Time In Exchange For A Premium (Land Rent) Also Paid At A Specific Time Agreed. In This Article, We Shall Discuss The Steps Involved When Applying To Acquire A Leasehold Land Title.


Step One: At The District


The Application Shall Pick, Fill And Submit Form 8, Form 10, Form 18 And Form 23 From The District Land Management Office Or District Land Board (DLB) For Processing. After Processing, The DLB Will Return The Fully Completed Forms To The Applicant For Onward Submission To The Ministry.


Step 2: Requirements


Forms 8, 10, 18, 23, A Set Of 3 Authentic Deed Plans, 3 Passport Photographs, Receipts Of Payment, Forwarding Letter Requesting For A Leasehold Title Signed By The District Land Officer Of The Respective District Where The Land Is Located.


Step 3: At The Department Of Land Administration


Present The Full Set Of Original Documents And A Photocopy Of The Same To The Department Of Land Administration For Checking.


The Photocopy Is Stamped ‘Received” And Returned To You. Check With The Department Of Land Administration After 10 Working Days To Confirm Approval Or Rejection.


If Rejected, A Letter Explaining Rejection Is Written And All Documents Returned To Applicant For Correction And Re-Submission.


Step 4: Office Of Land Titles


The Documents Are Forwarded To The Department Of Land Registration (Office Of Titles) For Preparation And Issuance Of Lease Agreements.


You may check the offices after 10 working days to pick up the Lease agreements for signing and sealing by the Chairperson and Secretary of controlling authority, pay Stamp Duty (1% of the premium and 1% the yearly rent multiplied by the number of years granted).

Step 5


Present fully signed and sealed Lease documents by the District Land Board Chairperson and Secretary and Lease agreements embossed by URA. You will be given a photocopy of the Lease agreements stamped ‘Received’. Check after 20 working days.

Step 6


Present the photocopy given to you by the Department of Land Registration stamped ‘Received’ and identification documents upon collecting the Leasehold Title. Sign for the Title. The Photocopy is stamped ‘Returned’ on completion.
